Charlotte Sometimes Quilt Pattern by Sarah Fielke

Inspired by a treasured vintage quilt top signed “Charlotte Tompkins, 1939”, this striking Burgoyne Surrounded quilt is a celebration of colour, history and bold creativity. The original top – complete with wonderfully funky appliqué flowers – was so full of personality that it simply had to be brought to life through hand-quilting. Charlotte was clearly well ahead of her time, and her groovy 1930s spirit lives on in every block.

So enjoyable was the process of quilting the original, that this second version was born – beginning with a dramatic black background that seemed to magnetically attract a vibrant Kaffe Fassett fabric stash. Against the deep black, the saturated colours glow and flash, creating extraordinary contrast and movement across the quilt. Extra appliquéd circles add playful positives and negatives around the circular piecing within each block, enhancing the dynamic visual effect.

There are plenty of small pieces and the appliqué is a little fiddly, but don’t be intimidated – this is a deeply rewarding project and you’ll soon find yourself just as charmed by Charlotte’s design as we were.
